4 Strategies for Embracing Obstacles

If you’re facing some life challenges, and believe me I know what that’s like… it can be hard to remember that it’s normal. Everyone has setbacks, health challenges, disappointments, and really tough times.

The most successful people you know of and admire have ALL had obstacles that could have stopped them!

But going through a rough patch doesn’t have to spoil your whole life — or your attitude about it.

The key to thriving in the face of adversity is how you respond to the obstacles. In fact, sometimes obstacles are the way!

That’s what I know to be true in my own life AND in the lives of the most successful high level people I know.

Here are four strategies to help you ride it out and come out on top.

Decide to embrace the obstacle

If you’re having a tough time, it can be easy to feel that you’re a victim. That's a trap!! Don't fall in to the victim mentality of it "always" happens to you, it's just "your luck", and good things "never" come to you. Know anyone like that? Commiserating (aka co-misery) is just as toxic for your mindset as the worst attitude. Beware!!

It's up to you to decide that you won’t be overwhelmed. Choosing to take control of your mindset and embrace the challenge is the first step in overcoming it. Look your obstacle square in the face and resolve to meet it.

Be okay with discomfort

It's shocking to me that our human nature would rather sit in the pain of mediocrity, rather than the pain of getting uncomfortable. The proof that you’re embracing your obstacle is acknowledging that it doesn’t feel good, and deciding to push through it anyway. It can feel uncomfortable, heavy, even painful.

There are lots of life experiences that hurt at the time but end up being for your best and highest good. From marathon training to going to the dentist to public speaking, you feel so much better once you’ve faced the worst. Remember: it won’t last forever. Don’t shrink from the bad feelings. You can ride them out!

Make sure you have a support team

You don’t have to face your obstacles alone. It can make all the difference to have people around you who are supportive, who’ll stick by you and encourage you when you want to give up.

If you have a support system, you’ll find that extra level of energy to help get you through. And you’ll be there for your friends and colleagues when they’re facing their own challenges. Once you’re part of a team who have each other’s backs, none of you will have to face ups and downs alone. You’ll fight together and celebrate success together.

That is one reason I love network marketing -- having a business where we are truly a team that wins when we help others win, is a good business model. My team has done multiple millions of dollars in online orders, and it's because of our incredible team!

Be grateful for your obstacles

This one will feel weird and awkward at first. Feeling gratitude for the challenges in life might sound counter-intuitive. But think about it. Accepting the challenge, resolving to meet it head-on, and overcoming it makes you a better, stronger person. Think of how good it feels to deal with a problem and solve it. To face fear and overcome it.

Being thankful for the opportunity to level up in life when faced with a challenge or setback, is a mindset hack that the most successful people all have in common. The more you practice this, the faster you'll be able to flip the "gratitude switch" and the faster you'll train your brain to see obstacles as THE WAY to your goal.

Without obstacles in your life, you would not grow and learn and become a better person.

Obstacles are a natural, normal part of living an authentic life.

I really love this book, if you want to learn more about this topic and work on self-development in this area, be sure to grab a copy of The Obstacle is The Way by Ryan Holiday.

The book draws its inspiration from stoicism, the ancient Greek philosophy of enduring pain or adversity with perseverance and resilience. Stoics focus on the things they can control, let go of everything else, and turn every new obstacle into an opportunity to get better, stronger, tougher.

As Marcus Aurelius put it nearly 2000 years ago: “The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.”

Some of the most successful people in history—from John D. Rockefeller to Amelia Earhart to Ulysses S. Grant to Steve Jobs—have applied stoicism to overcome difficult or even impossible situations. Their embrace of these principles ultimately mattered more than their natural intelligence, talents, or luck.

If you’re feeling frustrated, demoralized, or stuck in a rut, this book can help you turn your problems into your biggest advantages. And along the way it will inspire you with dozens of true stories of the greats from every age and era.
