How to stop crashing your Adrenals (and what are Adrenals anyway?)

Sometimes the problem isn’t just feeling tired—it’s what’s happening behind the scenes in your body. 🚩 👀 🚩If you’ve been dragging yourself through the day, constantly craving sugar or caffeine just to keep going, it’s time to stop blaming your sleep routine. The real issue might be your adrenals, those tiny glands that do way more for your energy than you think. Let’s talk about how to recognize the red flags and what you can do to finally feel like yourself again.

What Are Adrenal Glands?

Your adrenal glands sit right on top of your kidneys, producing hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. These hormones help your body manage stress, regulate metabolism, and keep your energy levels in check.  When they’re functioning properly, you feel balanced and can take on the day.  🎉 But when your adrenals are overworked—often from chronic stress—they can’t keep up, leading to adrenal fatigue.

Red Flags to Look Out For

- Constant exhaustion even after a full night’s sleep

- Cravings for salty or sugary foods

- Difficulty getting out of bed in the morning or staying awake later in the day

- Brain fog or trouble concentrating

- Mood swings or irritability

- Weight gain around the midsection

- Reliance on caffeine just to get through the day

If any of these sound familiar, your adrenals could be working overtime, and it’s time to give them a break.

What Is an Adrenal Crash?

When your adrenals are pushed to their limit, you can experience what’s called an adrenal crash. This feels like complete exhaustion, where even small tasks seem overwhelming. It’s a sign your body is telling you to slow down. If left unchecked, it can lead to even bigger health problems, so catching it early is key.

How to Support Your Adrenals

Healing your adrenals starts with reducing stress and giving your body the support it needs. Here’s how:

- Prioritize rest: Sleep is when your body heals. Aim for 7-9 hours a night and try relaxation techniques like deep breathing or meditation.

- Eat a nutrient-dense diet: Whole foods like leafy greens, lean proteins, and healthy fats help balance blood sugar, which is crucial for adrenal health.

- Cut back on stimulants: Too much caffeine and sugar can give you a temporary energy boost, but they ultimately wear down your adrenals. I use supplements that have a small amount of caffeine for energy and cognition  - plant based, crushed, ground, uncooked raws can metabolize efficiently without crashing adrenals.

- Adaptogenic herbs: Supplements like ashwagandha and rhodiola help nourish the adrenals and manage stress levels naturally.

The Gut-Adrenal Connection

Did you know that your gut health plays a big role in supporting your adrenal glands? An unhealthy gut can lead to inflammation, which places extra stress on your adrenals. Plus, your gut bacteria are involved in hormone production, including those crucial for managing stress.

When your gut is in balance, it helps reduce inflammation, supports healthy hormone levels, and takes some pressure off your adrenals!!
