The Dirty Dozen: Foods Worth Buying Organic

Sometimes “organic” packaging labels are simply marketing hype. We all know that. But, sometimes, it’s REALLY worth scrutinizing!!  In my opinion, when it comes to fruits and veggies, don’t mess around!! 🙏🏻

Of course whenever you can, opting for organic produce can be a wise decision.

But, there is a list known as the "Dirty Dozen," which consists of fruits and vegetables that are more likely to contain higher levels of pesticides. ☢️🦠⚠️ Today, I want to give you a list & simplify it for you!

🍓 Strawberries:

Strawberries are a favorite fruit, but unfortunately, conventionally grown strawberries tend to have high pesticide residue levels!! In fact, a USDA study found that strawberries had the highest number of pesticide residues among all fruits!!

🥬 Spinach:

Spinach is packed with nutrients, however, non-organic spinach can contain residues from a variety of pesticides. According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), conventionally grown spinach has been found to contain high levels of pesticide residues.

🥬 Kale:

Kale has gained immense popularity in recent years due to its nutritional value. However, conventionally grown kale often contains pesticide residues. The EWG's analysis revealed that kale is among the most contaminated vegetables, with multiple pesticide residues found on it!

🍑 Nectarines:

These delicious stone fruits are known for their juicy and sweet flavor. Unfortunately, conventionally grown nectarines are frequently found to have high levels of pesticide residue. According to EWG's data, over 90% of conventionally grown nectarines tested positive for at least two pesticide residues!

🍎 Apples:

Apples also top the list of the most pesticide-laden fruits. The USDA's Pesticide Data Program found that conventionally grown apples had the highest percentage of samples testing positive for pesticide residues.

🍇 Grapes:

Grapes, both red and green, are a popular snack! However, conventionally grown grapes tend to contain high levels of pesticides. The EWG's analysis revealed that grapes had more types of pesticides than any other fruit.

🍑 Peaches:

Conventionally grown peaches often contain pesticide residues. The USDA's Pesticide Data Program found that peaches had relatively high pesticide residues compared to other fruits.

🍒 Cherries:

Cherries are typically heavily sprayed with pesticides during cultivation. The EWG's analysis found that cherries had high pesticide contamination, with residues of multiple pesticides found on them.

🍐 Pears:

Conventionally grown pears often have pesticide residues on their skin. Yuck!! According to the Pesticide Data Program, non-organic pears had detectable levels of multiple pesticide residues.

🍅 Tomatoes:

Conventionally grown tomatoes are frequently treated with pesticides. The EWG's analysis found that tomatoes had pesticide residues EVEN AFTER being washed and peeled. That is crazy!!!

🌿 Celery:

Non-organic celery can contain multiple pesticide residues. The EWG's analysis found that conventionally grown celery had high pesticide residues.

🥔 Potatoes:

Potatoes are a dietary staple for many, but conventionally grown potatoes are often treated with pesticides!! In fact, it goes all the way down the plant, into the tuber, into the potato you eat -- inside and out! Can you believe that?!?! The Pesticide Data Program found that conventionally grown potatoes had significant pesticide residues.

While eating a variety of fruits and vegetables is essential for a healthy diet, it's crucial to be mindful of potential pesticide exposure, too!!
