How to increase GLP-1 naturally without shots or medicines

GLP-1 is a trending search topic, and for good reason - people are discovering that GLP-1, or glucagon-like peptide-1, is a powerful hormone that plays a crucial role in our body’s metabolic processes.

What is GLP-1, really?

GLP-1 is produced in the gut by specialized cells called L-cells in response to food intake, especially when we consume foods rich in fiber and healthy fats. GLP-1 has several important functions, including stimulating the release of insulin, slowing down gastric emptying (which helps us feel fuller longer), and even reducing the secretion of glucagon, a hormone that raises blood sugar levels.

Research has shown that GLP-1 not only helps regulate blood sugar levels but also supports weight management and cardiovascular health. New research also shows that it helps women’s symptoms with PCOS.

By slowing down the movement of food through the digestive tract, GLP-1 helps control appetite, making it easier to avoid overeating. This hormone also enhances insulin sensitivity, which is particularly beneficial for those struggling with insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes.

But maybe you don’t want to take “the shots” or medicines (chemicals)…

So, how can we naturally enhance our production of GLP-1?

The answer lies largely in gut health. A well-functioning gut is crucial for optimal GLP-1 production. When the gut is healthy, it fosters a balanced microbiome—a community of trillions of bacteria that play a key role in many aspects of our health, including hormone regulation.

Research suggests that certain strains of probiotics can increase GLP-1 secretion. These beneficial bacteria can be supported through diet and supplementation. For instance, taking a high-quality probiotic supplement can help maintain a healthy balance of gut bacteria, which in turn supports GLP-1 production. Additionally, prebiotics—fibers that feed the good bacteria in our gut—can also enhance GLP-1 levels by encouraging the growth of beneficial microbes.

Another factor that can influence GLP-1 production is the consumption of specific nutrients.

Berberine improves blood sugar regulation and prevents damage to cells the produce GLP-1.

Green Tea Extract helps metabolism and is high in a polyphenol called EGCG that supports GLP-1 production.

Coffee Bean contains polyphenols called chlorogenic acid and studies have shows it can increase GLP-1 in the gut.

Oat Fiber is a fermentable fiber and one of the most surefire ways to increase GLP-1 through diet. It is broken down by microorganisms in the colon which trigger GLP-1 release.

Studies show that when people added Cinnamon to their diets it stimulated GLP-1 and stabilized insulin.

Protein in a premium quality shake can satisfy you and reduce appetite by increasing GLP-1 in a timely manner as well.

For those looking to naturally boost GLP-1 levels, but who get overwhelmed (like me 😂) about allllll the recommendations out there, what to buy, what to eat, what NOT to eat, etc… I recommend focusing on gut health first and foremost along with high-quality probiotics, prebiotics, and supplements with the nutrients I mentioned.
