I feel like a lot of us spin our wheels when we know something is “off”. Searching for a cause, and a remedy, is exhausting sometimes. Especially when it seems like no matter what you try, you end up still feeling the same! This hits close to home for me, as if you’ve been following me for many years, you know that I've faced my own health challenges related to autoimmune, detox, and genetic issues. The upside is that going through all of this prompted me to really dig deeper into holistic health, gut health, detox life, and nutrient absorption… including the role of supplements.
First of all, how do you know if nutrient deficiency is a problem for you?
It’s a common MISTAKE to think that nutrient deficiency is only applicable to malnourished people.
That is simply untrue.
Signs of Nutrient Deficiency:
Fatigue
Pale Skin/Anemia
Brittle Nails and Hair
Mouth Ulcers and Cracks
Muscle Weakness and Cramps
Poor Immune Function
Skin Issues
Vision Problems
It can all be so confusing, but I will save you some time and hassle…
Your gut, specifically the small intestine, plays a crucial role in nutrient absorption.
Surface Area: The lining of your small intestine has a vast surface area covered in tiny finger-like projections called villi. These villi are lined with even smaller structures called microvilli, creating an extensive surface for nutrient absorption.
Nutrient Transport: Nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream through the walls of the small intestine. A healthy gut lining is essential for this process to occur efficiently.
Microbiota Balance: The gut is home to trillions of beneficial bacteria known as the gut microbiota. These microbes help break down complex nutrients, produce vitamins, and contribute to the overall health of your gut.
Absorption of Specific Nutrients: Certain nutrients, like vitamin B12, depend on the production of intrinsic factor in the stomach and the presence of a healthy gut lining for absorption.
Inflammation and Nutrient Malabsorption: A compromised gut lining, as seen in conditions like leaky gut syndrome, can lead to inflammation and impair the absorption of nutrients, causing deficiencies.
Balancing Gut Flora: An imbalance in gut bacteria can interfere with nutrient absorption. A healthy gut microbiome can help maintain the gut environment for optimal nutrient uptake.
Digestive Enzymes: Proper digestion, facilitated by digestive enzymes, is a prerequisite for nutrient absorption. An unhealthy gut may produce fewer enzymes, affecting this process.
Bottom line… a well-functioning gut is critical for effective nutrient absorption.
To top it off, most supplements sold on the market as “gut health”, don’t even have an absorption or efficacy rating above 10%. How crazy is that? Meaning, most vitamins & probiotics people are taking out there just turn into “expensive pee”.
My personal experiences underscore the importance of an individualized approach.
I have been through SO many supplements and can tell you, not all are created equally!
If you don’t FEEL your vitamins making a difference, it means that they’re probably not!
