It’s not what happens in life that defines you but how you deal with your situations. You have probably heard the phrase when life gives you lemons turn them into lemonade. This is true, in that it is simply another way to say: turn adversity into success.
Believe in what you are doing.
Have you heard how Thomas Edison tried 10,000 times before getting the light bulb to the way he wanted it?It’s hard to say if that number became exaggerated over the years, but he likely tried several thousand times at least. The point is, he believed in what he was doing. The first step is to take a leap of faith.
Learn from your failures.
If you ask any successful person how they got that way, they will most likely tell you it’s due to overcoming failures. They didn’t just land there. They learned from previous failures and tried something different.
Let others help you.
Sometimes, when you face adverse situations, others can help you to turn your situation around. It’s rare that anyone faces something unique. I know it sounds bad but… you’re not that unique in terms of the challenges and obstacles that you face right now. Others have been through what you are going through. Reach out to them. It may be hard to find them though (for me, with my health challenges, it has been an ongoing DECADE-LONG journey to find people who don’t think I am crazy when I tell them what has been going on with me!!) Some people avoid reaching out because they are embarrassed. I was, too! If you’ve been following for long, I shared about my parasite discovery — talk about EMBARRASSING!! Just remember, other people once went through it, too. They know what you are dealing with.
Don’t aim low… but avoid setting too high of an expectation.
I am a BIG believer in stretching yourself in personal and professional growth, BUT, remember to honor your current level of skills. Start where you ARE, with what you HAVE, and GROW from there. By adjusting your expectations, you will overcome adversity and see small successes along the way.
Don’t wait to try again.
If your adversity is due to procrastinating, you can probably figure out you need to stop that behavior. Stop it!! If you let something build because it’s uncomfortable to deal with, in most cases, the situation will just get worse!
Learn how to conquer your fears.
Often, adversity is due to not taking action because you are fearful. When you face your fears, you can move past it and get on with your life. Do SOMETHING that scares you a bit. The point is to create situations that you would not normally find yourself doing. Usually, when you overcome one fear, the process helps you to overcome all of them. You’re literally training your brain to overcome what it didn’t believe was possible EACH time you do this.
Be honest with yourself about the situation.
People tend to hide their true feelings or deny that they are facing a challenging situation. Try some introspective to learn what is truly going on.
Oftentimes, when you look back and connect the dots, your hardest times have led you to the best moments of your life! That is reason enough to keep learning, keep overcoming, and keep going!
