Lately, my friends and neighbors have noticed that I have been totally obsessed with making my own sourdough bread, and I have been asked to share some reasons why (other than hello, it's delicious lol). 🍞 I have been making my own for a while now, and love it!! Not only is it super tasty, but it also comes with a bunch of health benefits that make it totally worth the effort.
Do you make your own sourdough? Lately, I have even been making sourdough Pita Pockets for our Gyros!! I will share my fav Gyro recipe below!! But first, here are a few reasons why I LOVE making my own:
Easier to Digest
First off, sourdough is way easier on the stomach. The fermentation process breaks down a lot of the gluten and proteins, so if you have a sensitive tummy (like me!), it’s a game changer. I’ve noticed a huge difference since switching from regular bread to sourdough.
Nutrient Boost
When you make sourdough, the natural fermentation process helps unlock more vitamins and minerals in the bread. We’re talking B vitamins, iron, magnesium, and zinc. Your body can absorb these nutrients more easily compared to other breads, which is a big win in my book. And of course, complemented with the BEST vitamin supplements I've found, it is a winning combo.
Steady Blood Sugar
Sourdough has a lower glycemic index, which means it won’t spike your blood sugar like other breads might. This is especially good if you’re trying to keep your energy levels steady throughout the day. I’ve found that I don’t get those mid-morning crashes anymore since I started eating sourdough toast for breakfast.
Gut Health
If you have been following me for any length of time, you know how IMPORTANT gut health is, and you've heard me talk about it for more than a decade. Gut health is directly linked to your overall health including your brain, mood, energy, appetite, organs, immune system, and more.
Fermented foods are great for your gut, and sourdough is no exception. The natural probiotics from the fermentation process help support a healthy digestive system. While baking does kill most of the probiotics, the prebiotics that remain are still beneficial.
Mineral Absorption
Phytic acid in grains can block mineral absorption, but the fermentation process in sourdough reduces these acids. So, you end up getting more out of the minerals that are present in the bread. This is awesome for boosting your intake of things like iron and calcium.
Fewer Ingredients, Better Quality
One of the best things about making sourdough at home is knowing exactly what’s in it. No weird preservatives, no artificial additives, just flour, water, and salt. It’s clean eating at its finest!
Flavor Explosion
Last but definitely not least, the flavor of homemade sourdough is out of this world. 🌎 The fermentation gives it a unique tangy taste and a texture that’s both chewy and crispy. It’s seriously addicting and makes every meal feel special. YUM! Our fav lately is making Gyros out of the bread, like Pita Pockets!! We have had them for dinner and breakfast sandwiches!
If you haven’t tried making your own sourdough yet, give it a shot! It’s not just delicious; it’s also packed with health benefits that make it totally worth the time and effort. Plus, there’s something really satisfying about baking your own bread from scratch.
